Is Art Criticism 50 Years Behind Poetry?

The bird makes this noise: Klatch:

For Shaw, coterie is not a closed world of intimates but an interlocking, open-ended set of associations and affiliations. He links coterie to the socio-historically self-conscious poetics of the local, community, and other collective formations. The poetics of coterie is presented by Shaw as an alternative to universalizing conceptions of poetry. O’Hara’s location of himself not in an homogenous elite but rather in intersecting constellations of persons (real and imagined affiliations), together with his famous time-stamping of his poems (it’s 12:18 in New York as I rewrite this sentence) both work against the Romantic Ideology of timeless poems by great individuals.

Sparrow on Silliman

John Sparrow on Ron Silliman's Talk at Birkbeck in London:

On reflection, he acknowledged that poets, by and large, would like to put work out, and that if they actively resisted the blogging medium or a web presence in general they were committing professional suicide. This is not mutually exclusive to the sense of community which can potentially be built through the collaborative writings of online discussion, nor must it exclude or wipe out physical community. What blogging does enable is a more instantly and further reaching rigorous testing of community standards.

Speechless

Derek Beaulieu:

I'm making a limited edition magazine/ephemeral object entitled "speechless" dedicated to the dissemination and discussion of concrete / visual poetry. Each issue of "speechless" will be between 20 and 28 pages per issue and will feature 3 - 4 poets -- the submission deadline is open (issues will be published when enough accepted submissions accumulate), and I plan to include both poetry and criticism.

Text Festival Round-Up

There has been much said about the Text Festival. As well as the arrival in the country of Ron Silliman for the first time, there have been numerous records, opinions and dissections recognised and asserted by a variety of peeps. Among them are Ron Silliman himself, Geof Huth (whose reading is available to listen to on Openned) Matt Dalby, James Davies, Tom Jenks and Scott Thurston at The Other Room, Richard Barrett and Colin Herd, to name but a few. The links take you to specific posts but many of the blogs offer more enhanced commentary and thoughts. Tony Trehy has a few posts about it too.

Geof Huth at the Text Festival

Geof Huth at the Text Festival (AAC, 27min, 9.9MB) Audio of Geof Huth reading at this year's Text Festival. I have cleaned the audio up as much as possible but due to the rudimentary nature of my recording equipment (an iPhone left in a pocket) headphones may be required. It is worth the effort.
